The typical approach is a one or two day workshop that gives people tools to do something better, different or new. Some statistics show there is a less than 10% return on investment from training programs. Why? 1- Leadership development is not a one-time training or learning event. 2- What rarely gets addressed are the dynamics at play such that person isn’t in action even when they often know what to do. 3- While people have great intentions to make changes when they leave a training program; they get back to their fast-paced world of competing demands and those intentions are soon forgotten. It’s a combination of reality and human nature.

Further to that, years ago I noticed a theme emerge in feedback from the custom-designed 1-3 day workshops I offered. Consistently, participants voiced their appreciation for the opportunity to connect with their peers, talk about common issues, and explore solutions. They said it was in the connection and the dialogue where they received the highest value for themselves, personally and for their organization. Recognizing this pattern, my workshops now engage participants in Meaningful Dialogue™ -- frank conversations about tough issues. As a result people’s “best” selves emerge and the team is united in strength. The “real” process of leadership development is an ongoing dialogue.
